The second largest opera company in North America, San Francisco Opera was founded by Gaetano Merola and incorporated in 1923. The company's first performance took place on September 26, 1923 in San Francisco's Civic Auditorium. They have come a long way since then.
Originally presented over two weeks, San Francisco Opera's season contains around 75 performances of ten operas throughout the year. San Francisco Opera celebrated the 75th anniversary of its performing home, the glorious War Memorial Opera House, in 2007.
Their vision statement simply reads, "To be the most exciting force in the opera world." Presenting world-class productions with world-class singers, beloved classics and innovative world premieres, San Francisco Opera continues to be a major voice in contemporary opera.
