Born in a storefront on College Avenue, Berkeley Rep has moved to the forefront of American theater by telling unforgettable stories. Founded in 1968 by Michael Leibert, BRT quickly earned respect far and wide for presenting the finest plays, performed by the finest actors. In 1980, with the support of the local community, Berkeley Rep built the 400-seat Thrust Stage where its reputation has grown steadily since. Gaining renown for presenting an adventurous combination of theatrical works, it presents important new dramatic voices alongside refreshing adaptations of seldom-seen classics.
In recognition of its place on the national stage, Berkeley Rep was honored with the Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theater in 1997. In 2001, the company unveiled their new 600-seat proscenium stage, the state-of-the-art Roda Theatre. In the past few years, Berkeley Rep has helped send several hit shows to New York City including Eurydice, Taking Over, Passing Strange, and the Tony Award-winning American Idiot.
